“Thank you for engaging the pupils into this project- this has been a very valuable experience for them! We are really pleased with the finished product.”
S. Chudley – Head Teacher
“Matt was very friendly. He explained things to the children and let them get involved which they thoroughly enjoyed. The pupils felt that they were lucky to learn this additional lesson and develop further skills such as teamwork. The pupils really like the new play area. They are impressed with the effort that Matt and his team put in and feel like it could hardly be any better. They think it is great and useful for all pupils in more years to come.”
J. Belle – Class Teacher

What were the reasons for developing your outdoor space?
We developed the playground because the pupils wanted more to do outside. We conducted a survey and the pupils wanted new equipment and structures to engage them and to have better play and lunchtimes.

How we transformed the play area to provide outdoor learning opportunities for the children:
The Pupil Council at Portway were involved from the very first stages of their new play area and they knew from a survey conducted what they were looking for. The Pupil Council helped us to measure the site on our initial visit and were then consulted through the design process. They even had to make design decision based on keeping the new play area within a specific budget.
The winning playground included our Forest Climber 2, Play Frame 3 and an Outdoor Gym zone with Children’s Waist Twister and Tai Chi Discs. Everything was surfaced with Artificial Grass and safety shockpad where required.

How the children will benefit from the new play area:
Being involved in the full process the children had a real understanding of how the new play equipment would benefit all of their year groups. They now have opportunities to test their climbing, balancing and traversing. All of these activities will help develop their core strength and coordination.

The children were tasked with helping to sign off the play area on completion making sure everything was safe and ready to use and we’re pleased to say they all passed their Association of Little Landscapers test and received their certificates.

What were your main reasons for working with EPE over other competitors?
“You had a good range of equipment and had been recommended by others.”
