Crabtree Infants’ School

Harpenden - Hertfordshire

Built: June 5, 2015

What were the reasons for developing your outdoor space?

The School had an area adjacent to the tarmac that because of a slope was inaccessible to the children.

How we transformed the play area to provide outdoor learning opportunities for the children:

Three units were included to the top of the slope a Forest climber 1, Up & Over and Chin Up Bars giving the children a broad range of new play opportunities including climbing and traversing. We surface the entire slope with Rubber Mulch Safety Surfacing giving the children access to the equipment in all weather conditions. The Mulch also joined onto an existing platform of decking to link the two different areas of activity.

How the children will benefit from the new play area:

The Up & Over will develop climbing and coordination skills for the children as they use the net or tread logs either side to scramble to the top and over.

The Forest Climber 1 provides an unstructured climbing environment to test the children’s climbing, traversing and coordination skills whilst improving their upper and lower body strength.

The Chin Up Bars are a fan favourite and provide the children with three levels of challenge to hang, balance and roll over helping to develop their upper and lower body strength.
