Smith – School Business Manager What were the reasons for developing your outdoor space? “Our old climbing wall was tired and out of date and we needed more challenge for our older, and taller pupils.” How we transformed the play area to provide outdoor learning opportunities for the children: Once we had taken out the old climbing wall, we had an existing wet pour base which was ready to be used again and then overlaid with rubber mulch to create an exciting new area. The main objective from meeting with the school was that the pupils wated some really high and challenging units to keep them interested. We used a combination of our KS2 Trim Trail which included a 2.4m High Chin UP Bars, a High Boulder Climber A-Frame and a High Twist Net. The new units were arranged in a stand-alone formation so they could be used as individual stations and combined with a PE circuit using the exiting gym equipment. How the children will benefit from the new play area: The children at Brushwood Junior School now have an area to be brave and take risks with their abilities. The challenges include climbing, balancing, and traversing and at the height of the new equipment their sense of risk and accomplishment will definitely be improved. All the actions on the new units are designed to improve their upper and lower body strength and coordination.
